Quality Tip: Just-in-Time (JIT) Training Modules

Just-in-Time (JIT) training is a term used to describe knowledge made available just when it’s needed–for concept review for individuals and teams. It is an autonomous educational system that shortens the time between learning and application. By automating the JIT Modules, groups of learners in multiple areas can gather information during team meetings, while completing assignments, or when just wanting to learn about quality improvement. No teacher is required. TIPQC has offered educational events at all of its meetings and webinars, yet struggled with how to deliver the same information to missing participants, new hires, new and existing team members, and participants in new start-up collaboratives. JIT training is one way to breach the gap. Other methods we have used are to record the webinars and post the presentations to our website, plus providing Quality Tips in our e-zine (the JIT Modules will replace this). Quality Tips are now ready when you need them. We have developed JIT Modules in six areas:

To access the JIT Modules directly, go to http://www.tipqc.org/jit. The Table of Contents will appear on the right-hand side. Click on the topic you are interested in. This will also be available directly from this website by clicking on the QI section header. This is a first draft, and we welcome your feedback. What is missing? What is unclear? How could we better portray the subject? If you would like to submit illustrations, examples, or text for inclusion, please forward those to brenda.barker@tipqc.org. Enjoy your learning!

Projects Being Piloted

NICU – Human Milk Feeding Project

Final revisions are in process by the four pilot teams, with an anticipated pilot testing in the coming weeks with a Summer 2010 target for statewide kick-off.

Project(s) Being Developed for 2010

OB – Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign

Julie Ware M.D. and Karen Schetzina M.D. have taken the lead to review the evidence on available interventions in each of the 3 domains and the development group ranked strategies for inclusion in this toolkit. The multi-disciplinary pilot team continues to define the project and measures and should have this project piloted by this Summer or early Fall. OB offices, hospitals, and pediatricians interested in participating in the pilot please email Brenda.Barker@TIPQC.org.

Project(s) Being Developed for 2011

NICU – “How’s Your Baby?”

Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt will be leading this pilot group, along with Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women in Memphis, East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, and Johnson City Medical Center. Watch for more information.

NICU – Golden Hour

This project is also under development by The Med, Jackson Madison County General Hospital, and Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.

Project(s) In Sustainment

NICU – Admission Temperature Project

This project remains in sustainment for many of the teams, although some of the teams continue to actively monitor and regulate temperature during resuscitation and NICU transport as they reach their goals and stabilize their process. Be sure and use the TIPQC Temperature Forum to continue sharing and collaborating. The next webinar for the temperature teams will be on July 28, 2010.

For information on all projects, see the projects page.

Family & Patient Corner

CLABSI Parent webinar will be on May 5, 2 PM CST. All teams are encouraged to have their family advisors & hospital mentors attend.

New State Oversight Committee Members

TIPQC is fortunate to have Thomas Lundquist from BCBST in Chattanooga join the Oversight Committee as well as Rochelle Nelson, from Knoxville, a parent of three children who have been in the NICU. We look forward to their contribution!

Please note that we have added a calendar feature to our website, where these dates and others can be found.
