Data Collection Plan

Data collection is itself a process.  Collecting data allows you to monitor variation in a process, to see the effects of a process change, and to provide an objective forum for making decisions.

To maintain consistency and reliability of data capture, the team will need to develop a Data Collection Plan.

A good plan will address:

  1. Purpose (the why) of collecting the data.
  2. What data will be collected and who will collect it (see Operational Definitions)
  3. Measurement/selection of indicators.
  4. Sampling method.
  5. Design of data capture tools.
  6. Plan for a pilot test.
  7. Assigned responsibility.
  8. Training in data collection.
  9. Storage, editing of data.
  10. Planned analysis.
